Recipe for homemade buttermilk ranch dressing
What is Ranch Dressing?
According to Houston Press' Robb Walsh, the ranch may have started with cowboys' favorite buttermilk sauce because buttermilk became widely available at the beginning of the last century.
Ranch dressing is basically buttermilk mayonnaise flavored with herbs. Popularized when Clorox found a way to make the Hidden Valley brand shelf stable. (Slate says that bottled ranch dressing can keep for up to 150 days or about five months. A scary thought, right?)
